Hello

Welcome to the Urban Reef August newsletter....

Hhhhmmm, now we have been very lucky up until now with the weather this summer, but it does appear that the school holidays have had their normal jinxing effect! Heh ho, don't let it get you down…you may just have to come back inside on a few showery days where we will be full of the joys of summer and will try to hug you happy.

Anyway, in this month's newsletter we introduce you to yet another member of our team 'Tamdin' from Tibet in 'meet the team' (yes friend of Danny the drink, lovely Nick, Kay, Lauren and Janusz). He has an incredible story to tell you and I urge you to read it please; we introduce you to Jan and Austin in 'Meet the Customer'; to celebrate summer we have a simple vegetarian salad in our 'tummy' feature; of course an air show inspired competition because we're excited about that; we introduce you to master wine man 'Charles' in 'our friends' and end it all with a delicious summer way to still enjoy some beautiful coffee in 'Hiccup'.

The next 30 days

Summer is here

Most of you are probably aware that we are lucky enough to have the air show on this month, which really is an incredible few days down here on the beach. Please do book a table and come and join us at some time during the event to help soak up the atmosphere. You can even win a meal in our competition section later in the newsletter as part of the fun.

Weather permitting our BBQ will continue to run every evening on the deck when the sun shines. A cocktail and a BBQ watching the sun go down... you'll forget you're in Boscombe Village ;-)

Our dairy soft ice cream is available in the cone from our funky little stall on the promenade and the deli is packed full of the Kay the Cakes goodies from sandwiches to nibbles to enjoy on the sand.

You may also remember Steve the PT from our Bournemouth's thinnest restaurant feature. These 'boot camps' have now started and are running a few times per week at different times. He's changed the format a little to make it really easy for you to just turn up and pay as you go. Check out the latest details and times here. Steve's a really nice chap and these are fun ways to lose a few pounds and make some more space for our lovely pork belly!

 
 

Strum, strum, hum, hum...

As well as our regular Wednesday music slot, which moves to the deck when the beautiful weather permits for the summer, we also have some lively weekend deck music on the go. You can check here for latest updates. Reef regular Jonathon Cotton is playing again on Sunday 15th August and he gets the whole deck singing along to his great covers so make sure you join us for that one.

Meet the team

Tamdin Dorjee

This month I'd like to introduce you to Tamdin Dorjee. Tamdin is a KP (Kitchen Porter) at the Urban Reef and does an amazing job. Being a KP is a really tough job. It's hot, it's wet, it's frantically busy and it is absolutely key in keeping the restaurant running. Keeping the bar supplied with coffee cups and saucers, the restaurant supplied with crockery and cutlery and the chefs supplied with cooking pans and utensils. You have to be strong, fast and focused to be a great KP and amazingly Tamdin always has a smile on his face.

But much more than that Tamdin has a really incredible story to tell, and I would love you to take a few minutes to read it and be proud of what this guy has achieved. He has been tortured for six months and has walked across the Himalayas as just a little teaser as to why you should spend the next five minutes reading his story. I personally spent some time in Tibet in 1999 when I was a hippy traveller, and it is a country that had a great impact on my soul. A beautiful place, with beautiful people, but so much sadness at how the Chinese have destroyed their history and continue to torture their people. Anyway, this is not a place for my waffle or opinions really, but please read Tamdin's story here and shake him by the hand when you see him at the reef. You truly will be amazed that such greatness works at your local restaurant.

We love Boscombe, and having made it our home for the past four and a bit years we really want to recognise the amazing local community who make this place diverse! Each month we'll introduce you to a couple of our lovely customers, who as a thanks for being special will also get dinner for two on us. This month let me introduce you to:

Who: Jan & Austin

Love: Aus and Jan have lived in Littledown for the past 15 years from where they run a small, but 'perfectly formed' design agency - www.austinwellsdesign.co.uk They have had a love affair with the beach for as long as they can remember and when cycling, one of their rides of choice is along the prom from Hengistbury Head to Sandbanks. They love nothing more than setting off before work and stopping at Urban Reef on the way back for a freshly squeezed orange juice, or at the weekend for lunch and a glass (or 3) of wine!

Like the Urban Reef because: (Over to them...) 'Boscombe has been crying out for regeneration and a decent "watering hole" for years and finally, along came Urban Reef to fit the bill. Aus and I not only love the location and decor, but also the whole ethos of the place. The Staff have a very laid back but highly professional attitude - I say 'Staff' but actually they have now become friends.

Last January, Urban Reef became far more important to us than we could have ever imagined. I was diagnosed with cancer and was facing 6 months of harsh chemotherapy. Not knowing how I would cope physically or mentally, I found Urban Reef was the one place where I could chill out and regain my perspective. Six month's on, and nearly through the treatment, Urban Reef has seen me with hair; without hair; with various wigs; different hats and even dressed as Patsy from Ab Fab for Race for Life and all the way through we have had nothing but support, enthusiasm and friendship (and wine!). Thanks 'Guys'.

Anyway enough about them, if you're reading this newsletter chances are you too have already fallen in love with the spirit of the place and I am preaching to the converted. I know this was meant to be more about us than Urban Reef, but I just wanted to say a big 'Thank You' to them all.

What's in your tummy?

Vegetarian tower

After last month's rather complicated affair we thought a pretty simple summer salad was in order this month, although of course with a little 'Urban' twist. For this dish you need to make a mouse (easy) and a pesto (easy) and then build it all up into a rather lovely looking and delicious tasting tower (easyish). Please give it a go and let us know how you get on... photos of your efforts always appreciated.

The Goats Cheese Mousse

Ingredients

100g Rosary goats cheese or equivalent
Small handful of chopped parsley
100ml double cream
2g black pepper

Mix together all ingredients in a blender until smooth.

The Pesto

Ingredients

100ml olive oil
25g parmesan cheese
10g pine nuts
1 bunch basil
Touch of salt

Blend all ingredients together until smooth.

To assemble, your yegetarian tower you will need a mould, some lettuce leaves and sliced tomato. Put some lettuce, (your choice – Our chef prefers Cos himself) in the bottom, put goats cheese on top, add some sliced tomato, add a little more lettuce and top with goats cheese. Drizzle pesto around the plate with a few sliced olives to finish.... Easy!!!

Oohh, a competition...

Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines

The Bournemouth Air show is almost upon us (August 19th - 21st) so this month's competition is simple, get the best photo you can that captures the magic of the Weekend. You'll get a beautiful view from our restaurant or deck! So get your camera, phone, or if you are fast enough draw us a picture!

The General Wine Company

We work with some great local suppliers, and each month we try to introduce you to one, so that you can love them too. This month we'd like to introduce you to Charles Savage from the General Wine Company.

We've had the pleasure of working with Charles at the Urban Beach for a couple of years and at the Urban Reef since we opened. We rely on him to have the very tough job of finding out loads and loads of stuff about wine and making sure that we find some beautiful bottles for your quaffing. We're going to hand over to Charles for a few words now:

'I really enjoy working with the Urban teams and share their ethos for the finest quality and great prices. I'd like to quickly welcome you to our new summer wine list. Much sampling has been undertaken by myself and Mark, Chris and the team at Urban Reef, we started out with 100 wines and wrestled it down to a more manageable 32! (tough job)

We wanted the best wines of each type to show character, quality and value.

Last week at a staff training session the Touraine Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire valley came out as a strong contender, a fresh and crisp floral aroma with gooseberry and elderflower fruit, perfect with seafood or a goats cheese salad...

The Gavi Salluvii from Bergaglio from North West Italy was another firm favourite, elegant summer meadows of wild flowers on the nose, yes you try it... great with light pasta and salads.

Danny's top tipple was the Wild Rock Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, super zesty tropical peach and gooseberry flavours leap out of the glass, try this with the mussels it is a firm staff favourite.

When you are on the decking watching the sun slowly dip into the sea do try the Saint Sadoine Cotes du Provence Rose, I selected this from over sixty different Cote du Provence Roses at the Vinisud Wine Fair in Montpellier in April this year, it's strawberries and cream in a glass, elegant and soft with a mineral finish.

If you move inside when the sun has set and grilled meats are your thing , do try the Finca Constansia, from northern Spain, a blend of five grape varieties offering a richly powerful complex red with a velvet soft fruit finish.

Whatever your preferred tipple we hope you enjoy them I'll try and continue finding some great new varieties to keep the menu interesting. Cheers! Charles'

Hiccup

Urban Reef Iced Latte

We love coffee, a lot. But clearly in summer it's hard to drink quite as much as we would like, so we just have to experiment with a little of the 'iced variety'. Our recipe below is for a really simple classic with some fancier options below. Quick and easy, though you do need some great quality espresso. Enjoy...

Ingredients:

50ml of Espresso
7.5ml Sugar
200ml Organic millk

How to make it:

Fill up a large wine glass with crushed ice. Pour in the milk and sugar half way up. Pour a fresh shot of espresso on the top stir gently, stick in a straw and enjoy.

If you want to be a bit fancier try...

Spiced Rum Iced Latte
Jon's (Urban's boozemeister) own infusion of spiced rum, plus espresso and milk a little sugar all over crushed ice. Absolutely amazing!
